CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE
Which Mt. Fuji trail is right for you?
Both tours aim for the summit, but the trails, gradients, mountain huts and 5th Station facilities differ. Compare the options before checking dates and booking conditions on each tour page.
YOSHIDA TRAIL
Mt. Fuji Yoshida Trail
Convenient from Tokyo, with numerous mountain huts and extensive 5th Station facilities. It is a classic option to consider for a first Mt. Fuji climb.
- Generally moderate gradients make a steady pace easier to maintain
- Separate trails are used for the ascent and descent
- Numerous huts, shops and changing facilities are available
- The route can become very busy during peak periods
FUJINOMIYA TRAIL
Mt. Fuji Fujinomiya Trail
Starting at a higher elevation, this is the shortest of Mt. Fuji’s four main trails to the summit. The route is steeper and includes more rocky sections.
- The climb starts from the higher Fujinomiya 5th Station
- The same trail is used for both ascent and descent
- Steep, rocky terrain places more strain on the legs during descent
- The primary hut is Mannenyuki Sanso at the 9th Station
ROUTE COMPARISON
Yoshida Trail vs. Fujinomiya Trail
Difficulty varies with fitness, hiking experience, weather and congestion. This comparison helps with route selection; it does not guarantee a successful summit.
| Comparison | Yoshida Trail | Fujinomiya Trail |
|---|---|---|
| Trail character | More huts and facilities, with generally moderate gradients | Shortest summit distance, with steeper and rockier terrain |
| Worth considering if | This is your first Mt. Fuji climb and you value facilities | You have hiking experience and prefer a shorter summit approach |
| Ascent and descent | Separate trails | The same trail |
| Primary mountain hut | Hakuunso, 8th Station | Mannenyuki Sanso, 9th Station |
| Main consideration | Peak-season congestion and queues near the summit | Care is required on steep, rocky sections during descent |
