Japan’s Premier Alpine Route: Plan Carefully
The Omote Ginza Ridge Route, which passes through Mt. Otenshodake and heads towards Mt. Yarigatake, is one of Japan’s most popular alpine traverses. It’s crucial to plan with safety in mind, allowing plenty of time for the journey.
Day 1: Steep Climb to the Ridge (Yamabuse Lodge, 5 hours 20 minutes~)
Begin at Nakabusa Onsen and ascend the steep Kassen Ridge. Despite the challenging incline, there are frequent rest spots to help you reach the top. Enjoy chilled watermelon at the famous Kassen Hut before arriving at Mt. Tsubakurodake, known for its stunning views and granite formations. Tonight, stay at Yamabuse Lodge.
Day 2: Traverse to Mt. Otenshodake (4 hours 30 minutes~)
Start early from Yamabuse Lodge and head south along the ridge. After a series of gentle ups and downs, descend to reach a steep area known as Daigorinokashira. After climbing back up, continue along the granite ridge to the base of Mt. Otenshodake. Here, you can either head to Mt. Yarigatake or towards the Otenjo Lodge for the night.
Day 3: Stunning Views of Kita-Kama Ridge (6 hours 50 minutes~)
From Otenjo Lodge, ascend the slopes of Mt. Otenshodake for spectacular views of Mt. Yarigatake. The path includes challenging descents and climbs, including ladders and chains, before reaching the base of Mt. Yarigatake. Here, prepare for the final push to the summit.
Day 4: Descend Safely (8 hours 30 minutes~)
The descent can be long and challenging, especially if heading back to Kamikochi. Take care not to rush, as descending safely is crucial. The route back to Kamikochi is popular and safe, providing peace of mind.
